Kathmandu. Japan’s main consumer price rose 3.5 percent in April from a year earlier, according to government data. Data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications showed that the growth in the country’s main consumer price index has increased rapidly from the 3.2 percent increase in March.

Inflation, a key indicator for the Bank of Japan, which has scheduled the rate hike, has been at or above the central bank’s 2 percent price target since April 2022. According to the ministry, the main-core CPI increased by 3.0 per cent in April compared to a year ago to mitigate the impact of both fresh food and fuel costs.

Energy prices rose 9.3 per cent from 6.6 per cent in March. The government has cut utility bill subsidies in the month after restoring subsidies on electricity and urban gas consumed between January and March as rising prices continue to affect households.

Apart from fresh items, food prices rose 7.0 per cent, while household durables rose 6.4 per cent.
