Kathmandu. Japanese Ambassador to Nepal Maeda Toru has paid a courtesy call on Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Devenda Dahal. During the meeting held at the ministry on Tuesday, various bilateral issues were discussed.
Mentioning that Japan has been providing bilateral grants, bilateral loans, multilateral assistance and technical assistance to Nepal, he said that the major areas of Japanese economic assistance to Nepal include physical infrastructure development, human resource development, health, agricultural development, environmental protection, culture, etc.
‘We are grateful for the support received from the Japanese people, government, non-governmental organizations and universities in natural disasters including earthquakes. Nepal has always attached great importance to mutually beneficial relations and cooperation with Japan. Minister Dahal said during the meeting, “We want to benefit from Japan’s experience, knowledge, skills and technology in many areas including infrastructure development, industrial development, agriculture, hydropower.”
Japan has long been an important and reliable development partner for Nepal’s social and economic development. Japan has been contributing to Nepal’s socio-economic development since 1954.
The occasion was held to commemorate the high-level visits from both countries in the past. Minister Dahal expressed confidence that the bilateral visits held from time to time will continue to be a milestone in the very cordial relations between Nepal and Japan.
Minister Dahal said that there is great potential to attract Japanese investment in Nepal’s development priority areas. He urged Japanese investors to further encourage them to invest in Nepal and said that Nepal is committed to ensuring the security of their investments.
Minister Dahal mentioned that the upcoming year 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and that Nepal will be upgraded from the list of least developed countries in the same year. In human resource development, Japan has been providing annual scholarships to Nepalese government officials in various fields under the Japan Development Scholarship (JDS) scheme since 2016.
Since Japan joined the Colombo Plan, the Japanese government has started providing technical training to Nepali students. Minister Dahal expressed his gratitude to the Japanese government for such support. He expressed his happiness that Japan is a close development partner in Nepal’s major program to introduce tunnel technology in the development of road infrastructure with the inauguration of the Nagdhunga Tunnel.
