Japan sees surge in tourist arrivals, hotel stays hit historic record

Agency. Japan’s hotels recorded 48.33 million overnight stays in February, breaking the record for the same month last year. The Japan Tourism Agency said the surge in foreign tourist arrivals has boosted demand for hotel stays.

Overnight stays by foreign tourists last month reached 13.3 million, up 15.5 percent from a year earlier. This is the highest number ever. The Japanese government is encouraging foreign tourists to visit regional destinations as overtourism begins to affect local communities.

According to the tourism agency, this plays a major role in strengthening the local economy.
