Sunsari. Santosh Lamichhane of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City-14 has earned a good income from rudraksha business. He has been selling Rudraksha in the premises of Pindeshwari Temple in Dharan-14 for the last five years.

Lamichhane, who returned from India for 12 years, started his business by making rudraksha garlands with the intention of doing something in the country. He said, “It is easier to sell various materials of rudraksha than to suffer abroad and the income is also good.” ’

He has been procuring rudraksha from dhankuta, Panchthar, Bhojpur and other hilly districts to make rudraksha materials such as garlands, bags, dhakis and jackets. According to him, he is earning between Rs 20,000 and Rs 30,000 per month. So far, all the expenses have been deducted and so much income has reached to manage the household expenses.

He said, “Even if you have to buy some items of your choice, this income continues to run. Even if only 1-2 items are sold daily, the money also comes in hand to avoid household expenses. Even if there is a small income, I am satisfied with this. ’

Lamichhane’s products are popular among foreign tourists visiting Dharan, Sunsari, Morang, Jhapa, Kathmandu, Kakarvitta and Nepal. He said that more people go to these places for sale. “Foreigners especially prefer rudraksha bags. ’

Stating that various materials are being made as per the demand of the customers, he said that they have been selling garlands for Rs 20 to 50, bags for Rs 300 to Rs 500 and bags for Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000, as well as rudraksha jackets for Rs 5,000 to Rs 5,500. According to him, only five to seven dhakis are sold daily.

He said, “Although there is normal trade at other times, the trade is even better in the Bolbam Fair, which lasts for a month in the month of July. He said that he used to produce materials by hiring three workers and now he is selling rudraksha materials by hiring one employee.

Rudraksha is not easily available at the local level, so he goes to places like Dhankuta and Bhojpur and buys it by taking a contract. Stating that the price of a plant ranges from Rs 100,000 to Rs 150,000, he said, “There is no problem in the sale after making the materials by bringing rudraksha from the plant. ’

According to businessman Lamichhane, Rudraksha grows like walnuts on trees that especially have green leaves, white flowers on long branches. He said, “Usually rudraksha of one to 14 mukhi is easily available. One-faced and nine to 14-faced Rudraksha are considered very rare. Rudraksha, considered to be the favorite plant of Mahadev from the religious point of view, is known as ‘Dana’ in the hilly villages. ’
