Kathmandu. Minister for Health and Population Pradeep Poudel has said that Nepal has made progress in the field of eye health services.
Addressing the first-ever international conference called ‘In Sight of Life 2030’ organized in Nepal by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), an umbrella organization of various organizations working in the field of eye health around the world, today, he said that they are working towards achieving the goal of universal eye health services.
Minister Poudel also said that Nepal has a new treatment method for eye treatment. He said that urbanization, aging and lifestyle changes are increasing the demand for eye health services. He noted that blindness is still high in South-East Asia and highlighted the need for significant progress in the eye health sector at the conference.
Minister Poudel said, “The Ministry of Health has given high priority to ensuring access to eye care.” He informed that Nepal will integrate eye care into the national health system and build strong partnerships in schools, workplaces and communities to further improve it.
Professor of Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh, Prof. Dr. Chetraj Pant, informed that the association is making continuous efforts to provide access to quality eye health at the community level. The conference is attended by representatives of IAPB member organizations working in the field of blindness prevention and eye health from all over the world.
International charities, eye hospitals, educational institutions, professional associations and corporate organizations working in the field of eye health are mainly members of IAPB. Nepal Netrajyoti Sangh, Nepal Eye Hospital, Tilganga Eye Institute and BP Eye Foundation are members of IAPB.
IAPB, which is an umbrella organization of various organizations working in the field of eye health from all over the world, has been advocating for eye health internationally. Every year, various international conferences are organized in different countries to promote global collaboration, inspire leadership, and strengthen advocacy in the field of eye health.
The 2024 IAPB conference was organized in Mexico. According to Yuddhwaj Sapkota, Head of IAPB South East Asia, 500 people from about 100 countries are participating in the conference. The conference will include exchange of experiences and challenges in eye care services among the participating countries, and special lectures by ophthalmologists.
According to Dr. Shailesh Kumar Mishra, Executive Director of Nepal Netrajyoti Sangh, the conference will discuss the necessary strategies and plans for the field of eye health in the world by 2030. The association’s general secretary, Bharat Bahadur Chand, said that the conference would globalize Nepal’s eye treatment services and also provide significant support to the country’s tourism development.
