Birgunj. In Parsa district, three partnership forests and their surrounding areas have been encroached on 468 hectares of forest. According to the Division Forest Office, Parsa, Thori, Gadimai, Vindhwasini, and Sabiya partnership forests have been encroached on the most in the district.
Division Forest Officer, Parsa Division Forest Office, Manjur Ahmed, informed that there is a tendency of encroachment on forests due to the high demand for wood for the large population of the district and the weak forest administration.
‘The Division Forest Office does not even have the staff as per the posts. Due to which, due to limited manpower, it has become difficult to monitor and supervise adequately,’ he said, ‘Although the office has a staff of 100 employees, currently there are only 53 employees. We are working with limited resources and manpower.’
According to the report of the Forest Research and Training Center, 2080, the area with the most forest encroachment in Parsa district is the area from Thori 4 Barahandi to the west. Where 200 hectares of forest have been encroached. The Gadimai partnership forest area has been encroached on 167.68 hectares.
Sakhuwa Prasauni partnership forest has been encroached on 33.2 hectares, Sabiya partnership forest has been encroached on 22.23 hectares. Similarly, the office has stated that 12.6 hectares of Vindhwasini partnership forest have been encroached on. Divisional Forest Officer Ahmed said that everyone should work together to protect the forest and other forests.
‘Right now, the narrative is being created that the work of protecting the forest is only the responsibility of the Divisional Forest Office,’ he said, ‘It is necessary for everyone to work together to protect the forest.’
According to the office, in the district, some parts of the forest area have been encroached upon for the construction of physical infrastructure such as public schools, monasteries, police and army barracks, roads, etc., and infrastructure and other structures have also been built.
The office is facing problems in regularly monitoring and inspecting the forest due to the lack of sufficient manpower. There is 11,575 hectares of forest area in Parsa. There are four community forests and three partnership forests in Parsa. The forests here contain trees of various species, including sal, khair, masala, tik, simal, siso, jamun, and others.
