Kathmandu. Governments around the world are trying to evacuate thousands of their citizens trapped in the fast-growing Israel-Iran conflict.
They are arranging buses and planes and in some cases helping people cross the border on foot. Foreigners have been in a hurry to leave both countries after Israel launched an unprecedented bombing campaign targeting Iran’s nuclear and military facilities on Friday. But after israel’s airspace was closed and the two countries fired heavy missiles, many people have been evacuated from third countries.
European countries have already repatriated hundreds of their citizens from Israel. The Czech Republic and Slovakia said on Tuesday they had repatriated 181 people on a government plane. “Due to the closure of the airspace, it was not possible to send military aircraft directly to Israel,” the Czech Defense Ministry said in a statement. They crossed the border on foot. The German government said flights through Jordan were scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, while Poland said the first group of its citizens would return on Wednesday.
Greece says it has repatriated 105 of its nationals and several foreign nationals through Egypt. A private plane carrying 148 passengers landed in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia on Tuesday.
The U.S. ambassador to Israel on Wednesday announced plans to evacuate Americans by air and sea. “The Embassy is working on evacuation flights and cruise ship departures for U.S. citizens who wish to leave Israel,” Ambassador Mike Huckabee wrote in a post on X.
Australia has started evacuating more than 1,500 people from Iran and more than 1,200 from Israel. But Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the missile attack made it too risky for civilian planes to land in any country. “There is no capacity to bring civilian planes in, it is very risky and the airspace is closed,” he told national broadcaster ABC. We are trying to do more in the next 24 hours. ”
Pakistan has closed its border points with neighbouring Iran, except for Pakistanis who want to return to their homes. Around 1,000 Pakistanis, including at least 200 students, have fled so far. New Delhi: Around 110 Indian students have been evacuated from Iran on a special flight from Armenia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday. New Zealand said on Thursday it had closed its embassy in Iran and moved two employees and their families from land to Azerbaijan. “If there are opportunities to support the departure of other New Zealanders in Iran and Israel, we will immediately follow them,” Secretary of State Winston Peters said in a statement.
Japan has ordered military aircraft on standby for some 1,000 Japanese citizens living in Israel and about 280 in Iran, government ministers said. Japanese embassies in Iran and Israel are preparing to use buses to evacuate citizens from neighboring countries, a government spokesman said. The war has entered its seventh day.
