Kathmandu.  Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday that Israel’s attack on a major gas facility on the Gulf coast was an attempt to extend the war beyond Iran.

“Dragging the conflict into the Persian Gulf region is a major strategic mistake, perhaps deliberate and intended to extend the war beyond Iranian territory,” Araghchi said at a meeting with foreign diplomats.

He was referring to an attack on a facility in South Pars, located in the sea near Iran’s southern Bushehr province. The region supplies about 70 percent of Iran’s domestic natural gas. The South Parse/North Dome Mega-Field is the world’s largest known gas reserve. Iran, which shares this vast region with energy giant Qatar, has been developing its share since the late 1990s.

Iranian media reported on Saturday that an Israeli drone had targeted a facility in South Parse Phase 14, causing a “massive explosion” and fire. Araghchi described the attack as “a very dangerous step” and stressed that any military activity in the Gulf “could involve the entire region — and possibly the entire world.”.

On Friday, Israel launched a massive attack on Iran, killing top military commanders and nuclear scientists and attacking military bases, nuclear sites and residential areas across the country. Since then, Iran has launched a deadly missile attack on Israel. On Sunday night, at least 10 Israelis were killed and dozens injured.
