Kanchanpur. The ‘autogen boring’ installed for irrigation four decades ago in Asaina, Shuklaphanta Municipality-4, has been repaired and put into operation. More than 200 families have benefited from this.

The ward office has repaired and put into operation the damaged boring at a cost of Rs. 200,000. ‘We have been deprived of irrigation facilities for years due to the damaged boring,’ said local Nepali Rana. ‘Due to continuous water leakage from the boring, nearly two bighas of land nearby had been converted into wetlands.’

After the work of replacing the boring valves, the fields can be irrigated whenever desired and can be closed when not desired, she said. Nathu Rana said that it has been difficult to cultivate due to continuous water leakage from the borehole. ‘After the borehole was repaired, it has been possible to irrigate the fields in a systematic manner,’ she said. ‘The water required for cultivation will be available from the borehole.’

‘In the past, we had been irrigating with a motor connected to the house’s pipe because it was not possible to supply water from the borehole to cultivate vegetables,’ Sushila Rana said. ‘After the borehole was repaired, irrigation has been possible easily.’ Before 2040 BS, automatic boring was installed to increase agricultural productivity by providing irrigation facilities to farmers’ fields.

Although the boring was operated smoothly for a few years after its installation, it was left idle due to damage to the valve. As the local residents could not find the money to repair the valve, farmers were facing the problem of continuous water leakage from the boring.

Ward Chairman Kamal Thakulla said that arrangements have been made to repair the boring and operate it systematically as per the demands of the local residents. He said that along with the repair of the borehole, a wall has been constructed to protect it.

The borehole discharges six inches of water per second. Ward member Manidatta Pant said that after the repair of the borehole, irrigation facilities have been provided to more than 60 bighas of land belonging to more than 200 farmers in the ward. Along with irrigation, the local residents have been using the water from the borehole for washing clothes, drinking and feeding livestock.
