Tanahun. About three kilometers east of the district headquarters Damauli, Bhadru Danda, Byas Municipality-1, is a small human settlement surrounded by forests. Ten families from the Dalit community live there.

These families, who have no opportunity for their own production and employment, have been earning their living by working all day. This problem is still there, but another problem that the locals have to face, even though they are in a forest area, is the extreme lack of drinking water. Local Hasta Bahadur Nepali said, “We are carrying water from the stream that has been there since the settlement.” The obligation to carry water up and down for about 15/20 minutes has been there since the settlement was established.’

He said that there is an additional problem as that water also dries up in Chaitra and Baisakh. He said that he has to face more difficulties as the drinking water source dries up in the months of Chaitra and Baisakh. He said, ‘Since we have to go through the forest to get water, there is also a fear of wild animals.’

To solve this problem, a plan to expand drinking water supply has been taken forward in this area. With the investment of Bhadgaun Drinking Water and Consumer Organization in Byas-1 and the federal government, a drinking water supply expansion plan has been taken forward in the settlement under the Madinadi Lift Drinking Water Supply Scheme. After fifty-one years of settlement, the locals are happy that the plan to expand drinking water supply to every household in Bhadru Danda is moving forward.

The construction of a 50,000-liter capacity ‘reserve’ tank has been completed and other work is underway. Under the same plan, a 200,000-liter capacity reserve tank has already been constructed in Byas-1, Amili Bhanjyang. The Madinadi Lift Drinking Water Project is being constructed with 70 percent investment from the government and 30 percent from the Bhadgaun Drinking Water Corporation, informed the organization’s manager Ishwar Shrestha.

‘The Madinadi Lift project has been taken forward as there are problems with drinking water supply with the expansion of settlements,’ he said, ‘It is believed that the residents of the ward will be relieved after this project is completed.’ According to Shrestha, an agreement was signed with Parajuli Construction in Bhadra 2079 BS at a cost of Rs 190 million and the work has been taken forward.

Although an agreement was made to complete the project within Bhadra 2080 BS, the project has not been completed due to delays in the construction work. Organization chairman Chij Bahadur Darai said that the project will be completed soon as the construction work has recently gained momentum after the necessary facilitation. The drinking water organization was established in 2056 BS and started distributing water from 52 public taps. Currently, the organization has connected 2,680 private taps and distributed water through four projects, both large and small.
