Agency. Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano in south-central Indonesia has erupted three times so far on Friday. The eruptions sent an ash column 8,000 meters high, prompting authorities to expand the danger zone around the volcano. Information about the evacuation was not immediately available.

The volcano on the remote island of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara province has been hit by hundreds of earthquakes and visible volcanic activity has increased significantly in the past seven days.

Authorities have raised the eruption alert to the highest level and expanded the danger zone from seven kilometers to eight kilometers from the crater. The eruption has caused some airlines to cancel flights between Australia and the Indonesian tourist island of Bali, while other international and domestic flights on the island have been delayed.

Indonesia’s geological agency said in a statement that residents were warned to be vigilant about heavy rains that could trigger lava flows in rivers from the volcano. In November, Mount Levotobi Laki Laki erupted, killing nine people and injuring dozens.

The 1,584-meter-high mountain is a twin volcano connected to Mount Levotobi Perempuan in Flores Timur district. Indonesia is an archipelago of 270 million people. It is prone to frequent seismic activity. It has 120 active volcanoes and is located on the ‘Ring of Fire’. The Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped series of seismic fault lines that encircle the Pacific Basin.
