Kathmandu. The restrictions imposed on the export of some Nepali goods to India have been lifted. The path to export has been opened after India renewed the Bureau of Indian Certificates (BIS) certificates of Nepali cement, zinc sheets, plywood and other materials.
Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Damodar Bhandari had discussed the issue with his counterpart Piyush Goyal during his visit to India a few months ago. He had taken the initiative to export Nepali goods to India and facilitate their sale and distribution in the Indian market.
The Nepal-India Commerce Secretary-level meeting held on 10 and 11 December had an in-depth discussion on the issue of BIS acquisition, renewal and export facilitation. After Nepal raised the issue with priority, the Indian side expressed its commitment to resolve the issue.
India has made BIS mandatory for the export of cement, galvanized sheets, plywood, sanitary pads, shoes and other materials. When India did not renew the BIS, cement exports from Nepal to India had been stopped for five months and plywood exports for one month. Nepalese businessmen were pressuring the Nepal government regarding the issue of BIS renewal.
According to Hom Prasad Ghimire, President of the Nepal Plywood Manufacturers Association, exports will be easier after obtaining BIS. He said that India is currently renewing the BIS. According to him, about a dozen industries have already renewed their BIS.
He informed that 34 trucks of plywood that were delivered to Kakadvitta for export to India some time ago are at the border due to lack of BIS. It is said that some cement companies are also going to export cement to India easily after the BIS is renewed.
There is still one month left for the renewal of the certificate. According to Ghimire, about three cement industries are exporting to India and half a dozen cement industries that have not renewed will get BIS within a month.
