Baglung. The rural settlements of Jaimini Municipality of Baglung have become deserted due to increasing migration. As the locals started leaving the village, the agricultural land is getting conflicted and the houses are becoming dilapidated.
The trend of migrating from village to city market in search of service facilities has increased. Jaimini is considered as the most migratory municipality in the district. In the last two years, 1,709 people from 482 households have left the village from Jaimini. In 2080 BS, 947 people from 263 households migrated and in 2081 BS, 762 people from 219 households left the village. According to the municipality, 86 people from 26 households have come to Jaimini from outside in the last two years. In the year 2080 BS, 42 people from nine families came and in 2081 BS, 44 people from 17 families came to Jaimini.
Tara Prasad Poudel, chief of the registration section of the municipality, said that the maximum number of migrations took place from ward no. 8 and less from ward no. 6. According to Poudel, 403 people from 107 households have migrated from ward no. 8 in the last two years. According to him, 157 people from 42 households from ward no. 1, 258 from 77 houses from ward no. 2, 100 from 34 households from ward no. 3 and 191 people from 52 households from ward no. 4 have migrated.
Similarly, 83 people from 24 households from ward no. 5, 55 from 14 houses from ward no. 6, 186 from 54 houses from ward no. 7, 129 from 39 houses from ward no. 9 and 147 from 39 households from ward no. 10 have migrated. According to him, most of the migrants from Jaimini have migrated to Chitwan, Nawalparasi and Butwal.
Deputy Mayor Harihar Sharma said that the municipality has been carrying out programmes to make the locals entrepreneurs and self-reliant in the village to stop migration. According to him, roads, drinking water, electricity, health and education sectors have been developed up to the settlements. Sharma said that although there is a huge potential in the village, many people choose the city market.
He said, “The aspirations of the people are unlimited, we are developing what the local government can do, but it is not enough that the village has not been developed as before, vehicles run everywhere now, there is drinking water facility, we have invested heavily in the education and health sectors, many people have started choosing the city market, but we are committed to providing quality services to those in the village, we are also running programs to make the citizens entrepreneurs and connect them with income generation.” ’
