Kathmandu. Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has said that Radio Nepal’s role in bringing about democracy was as important as it is now in bringing the country closer to national unity.

At the 75th anniversary (Diamond Anniversary) program of public service broadcaster Radio Nepal in Kathmandu today, Minister Gurung said that the violent protests carried out by the royalist group were of feudal tendencies. He mentioned that the special role of public service broadcasting institutions including Radio Nepal is to eliminate such behavior and show the people the importance of the republic and to provide truthful information to the people.

Reminding the history of former King Gyanendra handing over sovereign power to the people in front of the parties, he clarified that it is foolish to try to bring back the lost royal power. Minister Gurung said, ‘In a democratic system of governance, saying “King, come and save the country” is not the job of gentlemen.’

Minister Gurung, who is also the spokesperson for the Nepal government, said that the main responsibility of the Public Broadcasting Service (PSB) is to broadcast accurate information to the people rather than praising the government. He also suggested in the program that Radio Nepal should resonate in every person’s doorstep and for this, PSB model programs should be run that are suitable for Nepal’s soil.

‘Since Radio Nepal is a medium for creating national unity, it is necessary to make it accessible to all people,’ he said. Similarly, Secretary of Communications Radhika Aryal said that Radio Nepal has a glorious history and that after its transformation into ‘PSB’, it should be accountable to the people for the responsibilities it carries.

‘PSB’ Executive Chairman Dr. Mahendra Bista expressed his commitment to prepare inclusive content, stating that Radio Nepal will reach 100 percent of the people in the coming days. At the program, the Department of Postal Services published the first postage stamp cover related to Radio Nepal’s Diamond Jubilee. In which Minister of Communications Gurung provided a stamp on the stamp cover.
