Ilam. Suryodaya Municipality has extended the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Krishak Pathshala programme to Ward No. 1, Makarjung and Ward No. 13 Laxmipur with the objective of capacity building of farmers, knowledge exchange and promotion of pesticide-deficient farming. The municipality had implemented the programme from 2075 BS.

Under this program, 25 farmers are participating in each group. Chief of Agriculture Section of Suryodaya Municipality, Pragya Pokharel, said that training and practical practice on organic farming of Akbare chilli is going on in the school.

According to trainer Khem Raj Bhattarai, the farmers participating in the school are given the opportunity to see and learn the entire life cycle of the crop during one season. The participants are doing practical learning in the fields.

Kabita Sapkota of Suryodaya-1 said, “We have understood how to learn, eat and use less pesticides in the field this time.” Municipality Mayor Rana Bahadur Rai said that the local government is preparing to expand the IPM method as it reduces the use of pesticides and increases the quality of production.

According to him, the municipality has planned to expand the school in other wards next year, which is expected to make the farmers self-reliant at the local level.
