Kathmandu. Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pandey has expressed his commitment to take the initiative to bring the Federal Language Act as soon as possible.
At an interaction on ‘Regional and Endangered Languages’ organized by the Language Commission here today on the occasion of International Mother Language Day, Minister Pandey has expressed his commitment to take all possible initiatives to bring the Federal Language Act under the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. Stressing the need to protect endangered languages, he said, ‘There are 131 languages in Nepal. They can still increase, the main duty of the Language Commission is to protect and promote languages and they should be promoted and promoted.’
Noting that there is a possibility that languages can increase, Minister Pandey said that the main challenge is to protect existing languages. He said, “The main challenge of the Language Commission is to awaken the language in accordance with the spirit of the constitution. Developed languages are developed, and no one has any support for them. The Commission has an important role to play in preserving those languages.”
Commission Chairman Dr. Gopal Thakur said that after the commission determined the basis for selecting the language for government work and recommended the provincial language, he felt that new awareness and energy had been transmitted to the provincial and local levels. He said that facilitation work was being done for its implementation. He informed that good practices have also been initiated at the grassroots level regarding the use of mother tongue in education.
During the program, Dr. Taramani Rai presented papers on ‘Linguistic Status of Koshi Province’, Satyendra Prasad Yadav presented papers on ‘Linguistic Status of Madhesh Province’, Umesh Sthapit presented papers on ‘Linguistic Status of Bagmati Province’, Lok Bahadur Thapa presented papers on ‘Linguistic Status of Gandaki Province’, Bikram Mani Tripathi presented papers on ‘Linguistic Status of Lumbini Province’, Badri Binadi presented papers on ‘Linguistic Status of Sudurpaschim Province’, and Amrit Yonjan Tamang presented papers on ‘Status and Future Directions of Endangered Languages’.
