Hailstorm damages ripening wheat and vegetable crops

Baitadi. Hail that fell along with the rain has damaged crops and vegetables in the Sudurpaschim Province. Farmers have said that the hail that fell on Saturday afternoon caused extensive damage to the ripening wheat crop, vegetables and plants.

Hail damaged vegetables, fruits and grain crops in various areas of Dogadakedar, Sigas, Surnaya rural municipality and Patan municipality of the district. It is said that hail destroyed grain and vegetable crops in Baitadi as well as other districts of the Sudurpaschim Province.

Ram Bahadur Chand of Sigas rural municipality-9 informed that the hail that fell during the time of grain import caused extensive damage to the ripening wheat crop. The hail has turned the fields black. He said, ‘The wheat was ready to be brought in, but the hail destroyed everything.’

Dal Bahadur Karki of Dogadakedar-6 Sittad also said that the hail destroyed the wheat crop and vegetables. He said that fruits, potatoes, onions, garlic and chillies and the pods of cabbage, cauliflower and tomatoes were damaged. He said, ‘After the hail destroyed all the crops and vegetables that had started to ripen, it is seen that there will be a decrease in production. Farmers are worried.’

The Agricultural Knowledge Center has stated that the grain crops and vegetables have been damaged, although exact details are not available.
