Gunakar Bhatta resigns as Executive Director, looks set to become Governor

Kathmandu. Executive Director of the Nepal Rastra Bank, Gunakar Bhatta, has resigned. Bhatta said that he resigned on Friday.

Talking to Sindbar, Executive Director Bhatta said, “I have submitted my resignation on Friday.”

A tug-of-war has been going on between Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli over the appointment of the governor for a long time. Bhatta resigned when leaders were claiming that the governor would be decided within a few days.

The government has formed a three-member recommendation committee under the leadership of Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel to appoint the governor. Former Governor Vijayanath Bhattarai and economist Bishwa Poudel are members. Although the appointment of the Governor should have been completed a month ago under the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, the Governor has not been appointed yet.

It is said that Sher Bahadur Deuba and Prime Minister KP Oli recently reached an agreement on the matter of the Governor. It is said that the Council of Ministers will appoint the Governor in the next one or two days.

This is Bhatta’s experience

Dr. Bhatta is the Executive Director of Nepal Rastra Bank. He has an MBA with a Gold Medal from Tribhuvan University. He has a Masters in Economics from Williams College, USA and a PhD in Economics from Wayne State University, USA.

Having served in the NRB for 25 years, Bhatt has worked in the bank’s Economic Research Department, Banking and Financial Institutions Regulation Department, Banking Supervision Department, Payment Systems Department and Public Debt Management Department.

He has also worked as the bank’s spokesperson for more than four years. Dr. Bhatt has worked as an Economic Advisor and a member of the Revenue Advisory Board of the Ministry of Finance when Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat was the Finance Minister. Currently, he is also the Chairman of the Credit Information Center Limited. He was also a member of the board of directors of the capital market regulator, the Securities Board of Nepal.
