Government sets subsistence allowance for resident doctors of private medical colleges

Kathmandu. The government has decided to provide subsistence allowance to resident doctors studying at the postgraduate level in private medical colleges. The decision, jointly signed by Minister for Education, Science and Technology Bidya Bhattarai and Minister for Health and Population Pradeep Poudel on Monday night, has made a provision for subsistence allowance to be given to resident doctors studying at the postgraduate level in private medical colleges.

They have decided to provide subsistence allowance to resident doctors and send a letter to the concerned body. Accordingly, it has been decided to provide subsistence allowance to resident doctors studying at the postgraduate level in private medical colleges at the rate of at least 25 thousand in the first year, at least 30 thousand in the second year and at least 35 thousand in the third year. It is mentioned that this arrangement will be implemented from the academic session 2081/82 itself.

The fifteenth meeting of the Medical Education Commission held on November 21, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and Chairman of the Medical Education Commission KP Sharma Oli, had given the responsibility of resolving the problem related to the subsistence allowance provided by privately funded medical colleges to the Minister of Education and Health. Accordingly, the decision was made based on repeated discussions with various stakeholders, as mentioned in the decision signed by the ministers.

Similarly, the government has decided to make necessary legal arrangements to provide living allowance to resident doctors studying at the postgraduate level in private medical colleges from the academic session 2081/82 as per the scholarship guidelines of the Ministry of Health and to make arrangements for resident doctors who want to study free of charge to serve in the same educational institution for two years after their studies by signing a contract.

The decision states that private medical colleges should provide dignified service facilities to resident doctors studying at the postgraduate level in accordance with the university, Nepal Medical Council and prevailing labor laws.
