Agency. Renewable energy sources such as wind power, solar power, biogas and hydropower account for 59.4 percent of Germany’s electricity production, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) said on Wednesday.
According to Destatis, renewable electricity production reached an all-time high of 256.4 billion kilowatt-hours, representing an annual increase of 2.3 percent. Despite a slight decline in production, wind power remains Germany’s largest source of electricity.
Wind power production was expected to decline by 1.4 percent in 2023. However, its share in total electricity generation increased from 30.8 percent in 2023 to 31.5 percent in 2024.
Solar energy saw a significant increase, with electricity generation from photovoltaics increasing by 10.4 percent to 59.5 billion kWh. This brought the share of solar energy in Germany’s total electricity supply to 13.8 percent, the highest level since data collection began in 2018.
A total of 431.5 billion kWh of electricity was generated and connected to the German grid in 2024, a decrease of 3.6 percent compared to the previous year.
Destatis attributed the decline to a decrease in industrial electricity demand, lower production and an increase in electricity imports from abroad.
