Gandaki Province community schools launch ‘Learning and earning’ programme

Gandaki. The ‘Learning, Earning, Earning’ program has become effective in the community schools here. Students have been attracted to the program launched by the Gandaki State government with the aim of teaching life-saving skills along with studies.

Ghanashyam Poudel, director of the Directorate of Education Development at the Ministry of Social Development of Gandaki State, said that the program aims to produce scientists in the future by instilling interest in science.

According to him, the programme has been launched in 34 community schools of the state to create employment opportunities along with education for meritorious, poor and marginalized students. “The main objective of the programme is to make the community schools self-reliant by providing skills along with teaching,” he said, adding that the programme would help in enhancing the quality of education and economic stratification of community schools. ’

A total of 2,500 students participated in the event. Director Poudel said that as per the working procedure of the state government, financial assistance of Rs 500,000 has been provided to each school at the beginning of the program and Rs 200,000 per year after that. The programme has been implemented by establishing one steam lab each in 36 federal constituencies of the province.

Deputy Director at the Ministry, Rishiram Bastola, said that students of Bhimsen Adarsha Secondary School in Deuchuli municipality of Nawalpur district earned income by rearing naumati baja and beekeeping under the programme. According to the school, 150 new students have been enrolled in the school this year.

Bastola said, “Scholarship procedures have been prepared and implemented to help run the program by learning, earning and learning in the community schools where technical and vocational education is conducted, expanding the access of students of the target group to higher education and increasing the level completion rate.” ’

Schools are working to link students’ theoretical knowledge with skills. They have been cultivating vegetables, producing handicraft items and animal husbandry in the school premises to use the knowledge learned by the students. Students from classes 6 to 12 are participating in the programme.
