Palpa. Free health check-ups have been conducted for construction workers in the district. The Building and Road Construction Workers Association, Palpa, conducted a health check-up camp for 550 workers working in the construction sector.
The workers were excited to get a free health check-up. Ram Bahadur Gaha, who came to get health treatment, said, “I am happy that the Construction Workers Association gave me the opportunity to get a health check-up through the camp when I could not go to the hospital for a health check-up due to busy work and lack of money.” He said that he felt that we ourselves had been neglecting our health.
He also said that if the state could make arrangements for free health treatment for his workers, we would end the situation of losing our lives prematurely. He seemed happy to see many workers like him getting health check-ups. The association’s president, Suresh Karmacharya, said that the free health check-up was conducted through the camp with the aim of preventing workers from being unaware of their health condition while busy with daily labor and from reaching the hospital only after their health condition becomes complicated.
He said, “Most workers tend to live with illness due to lack of awareness. They only rush to the hospital when a complicated situation arises. Therefore, we have launched a health check-up campaign along with awareness, thinking that they are at risk.” President Karmacharya said that most workers working in the construction sector have some problem.
He said, “Most workers do not even know that they have high blood pressure or diabetes, but when they are examined, the problem is found. To end this situation, we have conducted health check-ups along with awareness.” The home of all workers working in the construction sector Chairman Karmacharya informed that they are providing necessary counseling along with health check-ups and distribution of medicines. He said, ‘Now health check-ups will be conducted every 6 months and those who are currently taking medicines will be followed up from time to time.’
A team including health workers has visited various places and conducted health check-ups. They have also provided necessary medicines and counseling after the health check-ups. Diabetes Counselor of United Mission Hospital Deepak BC said that during the check-ups, non-communicable diseases were found in most of the workers. According to him, 50 percent of the tested workers had high blood pressure and 30 percent had diabetes.
Councilor BC informed that other workers have back pain, leg pain, waist pain, and skin problems. He said that most of the workers who consume alcohol excessively have high blood pressure and diabetes. He said, “We have been testing them and giving them the necessary medicines, not only that, but we have also been advising them not to consume alcohol and about the risks that may arise if they consume it.”
Nilkantha Devkota, vice-president of the association, informed that the health check-ups were conducted at the homes, neighborhoods and workplaces of all the workers affiliated with the association. Humraj Basyal, secretary of the association, expressed confidence that the free health camp would provide great relief to the workers who find it difficult to make ends meet in the evening. He said, “Many are not even aware that they have diabetes or high blood pressure. It was only after the check-up that they realized that they had a problem, which at least made them cautious to avoid risks.”
