Gorkha. A free ‘screening’ camp for early detection of cervical cancer was held in Barpak, Sulikot Rural Municipality of Gorkha on Monday. One hundred and twenty women from the community underwent cervical cancer screening in the camp.
Among those tested, eight tested positive for cervical cancer, informed Modraj Bhatta, head of the rural municipality health branch. ‘Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid’ (VIA) test was conducted in the camp to identify the risk of cervical cancer in women. He said that the eight women who tested positive for VIA were immediately treated and re-tested after six months.
A cervical cancer screening and treatment camp for women aged 30 to 49 has been organized by the village council and with the technical support of the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation and the Nepal Cancer Relief Society. Chief Bhatta informed that HPV virus can be detected through the VIA method and treated before it becomes cancer. He said that the camp was conducted to identify and minimize the problems of cervical cancer and uterine prolapse in rural areas as they are more common.
‘The VIA test identifies whether cancer is developing after 10 years or what the condition of the uterus is,’ said Chief Bhatta. ‘We administer medicine and the test determines whether the HPV virus that causes cancer is positive or negative. Once the condition of the uterus is determined, treatment is started accordingly.’ He said that the rural municipality has been ‘screening’ women for cervical cancer through trained VIA nurses under the supervision of specialist doctors.
