Kathmandu. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Arju Rana Deuba, has urged the international community to support sustainable agricultural systems for countries like Nepal and Nepal and climate finance for mountainous regions. In her address to the 44th General Assembly of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Rome on Monday, she called for ensuring grant-based international climate finance for Nepal, which is facing the brunt of climate change, and its especially the Himalayan region.

Minister Rana said, “The mountainous regions of the country like Nepal and Nepal are the most affected due to the climate crisis. However, these areas have been neglected in climate finance and adaptation efforts. It is important for everyone concerned to pay attention to this issue. Stating that agriculture sector is the backbone of nepal’s economy, Minister Rana said agriculture contributes 23 per cent of nepal’s GDP and nearly two-thirds of the population is dependent on agriculture. From food security to nutrition, poverty alleviation and rural development, the role of agriculture is important, she said.

Minister Rana said that the goal of creating a hunger-free world by 2030 is still incomplete and the epidemic, climate crisis, economic instability and geopolitical tensions are also attacking the Sustainable Development Goals( SDGs). “Promotion of sustainable and tolerant hilly agriculture is essential and it is important not only for our livelihood, but also for ensuring biodiversity, food security and ecological balance of the earth,” she said.

Stating that Nepal is willing to expand successful and innovative agricultural practices with a ‘four better’ approach, she said, “We are looking for collaboration to expand farmers’ access to early warning system.” “We hope that cooperation with FAO will be further strengthened for the promotion of sustainable mountain agriculture in the context of increasing climate risk.” “Nepal expects sharing of experience and knowledge on successful practices to increase participation and leadership of women and young farmers.” ’
