He said that the work with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has only begun today and the goal is to extend it to all 753 municipalities in the coming days.

He said, “It is not possible for us to work alone and not have the structure of the Food, Technology and Quality Control Department in all 753 municipalities across the country. The work of maintaining food hygiene and quality is at the three levels. That act has also envisaged it. Today is just the beginning. As a model, we have signed a memorandum of understanding on what work the Metropolitan City can do to maintain food hygiene and quality. The Food Act also clearly states in Sub-section 6 of Section 26 of the Food Establishments Quality Act, 2081 that the Food Technology Quality Control Department will be responsible for supporting and facilitating the inspection and monitoring of food businesses by the provincial government and local levels. We have started under that.’

He expressed confidence that he would move forward by collaborating and agreeing with all 753 municipalities. He mentioned that although the department has a long experience in the quality of food items, it has not been able to do the necessary work due to lack of sufficient resources.

He claimed that if skilled technicians including food technology are deployed to assist in monitoring and regulation work, the health of all Nepalis would be protected. He emphasized the need to set up a separate body in the metropolitan city to monitor and regulate food hygiene and quality.

He stressed that it would be even better if food items could be tested, regulated, and managed in laboratories.
