Myagdi. The ‘muck’ that came out of the tunnel of the 25-megawatt Darwang-Myagdikhola Hydropower Project under construction in Malika Rural Municipality has been dumped directly into the Myagdi River, endangering aquatic life and increasing the risk of flooding and erosion in the coastal area.

The project, promoted by Dhawalagiri Kalika Hydro Limited, was promoted by the government by dumping the stones and soil extracted from the tunnel at Kamere-6, Malika Rural Municipality, into the Myagdi River and its banks, changing the course of the river.

After dumping the muck into the river, fish and other aquatic life have been left in the Myagdi River and the risk of erosion has increased in Darwang, Babiyachaur, Tatopani, Singa and Beni. Locals have complained about this.

There is a legal provision that explosives mixed in rocks and soil should be dumped on a separate land outside the river as the chemicals present in them are harmful to aquatic life. Division Forest Office Chief Bishnu Prasad Adhikari said that instructions have been given to manage the dumping of dumping dumped in the river and on the banks elsewhere.

‘Disposing dumping of dumping of hydroelectric projects indiscriminately affects the environment, I have given instructions to remove the waste,’ he said. The garbage that comes out of the tunnel of the Darwang Myagdi River is dumped on the banks of Gojja, Kamere, Darwang and Dhandkharka, on the banks of the river and directly into the river.

Project director Tejendra Roka admitted that dumping garbage into the river was a weakness and promised to find land and manage it.
