Udayapur. The flood following the incessant rains since this morning has damaged the under-construction concrete bridge over the Amaha River in Katari Municipality-2 here.

The under-construction concrete bridge connecting Simanpur and Kalyanpur along the Siddhicharan Highway has been damaged, informed Ward Chairman Prem Thapa Chhetri. The bridge, which is under construction using the ‘pre-stressed’ technique, has collapsed due to the flood.

According to Kamal Bajgain, Deputy Superintendent of Police at the Katari District Police Office, the damage is estimated to be worth Rs 20 million due to the collapse of the bridge. “The initial estimate is that the damage is worth Rs 20 million, there is no option but to build another one,” he said. “The actual damage details will come after the technical assessment.”

According to Mahesh Sah, engineer of the Mirchaiya-Katari-Ghurmi road project, the bridge was only 18 days old. The wires placed there were supposed to be stretched after 28 days, but the flood damaged them,” he said. “It has been insured and now the construction company will claim and proceed with the work.”

He said that the bridge broke when the water accumulated in the hummock pipe installed under the 50-meter-long and 11-meter-wide bridge washed away the formwork and supports. Surya & Sun Pvt. Ltd. Dharan had taken the contract for the four bridges under the road section on Ashad 29, 2079 for a lump sum of Rs 289.952 crore, with the construction to be completed in two years.
