Bhojpur. Farmers of Bhojpur Municipality-6, Paluwa are engaged in commercial orange farming. Farmers are attracted to orange farming as they can earn income for years once farming is expanded.
Pradeep Tamang, a local farmer, said most of the farmers in the area have been cultivating commercial oranges. At present, farmers are expanding new plants along with the protection of old plantations, he said. “Many farmers in our area are cultivating oranges commercially,” he said, adding, “Once the oranges are expanded, they can earn a long-term income after taking normal care.” It seems that farmers have chosen commercial cultivation of oranges as monkeys harm oranges less compared to other crops. ’
According to him, the ward office has been providing technical assistance along with distribution of saplings to the farmers engaged in orange cultivation. Although Bhangeri and Paluwa are dry areas, it has become easier for the farmers after the ward provided necessary support for irrigation, he said. According to him, the ward is constructing wells, distributing plastic ponds and pipes for irrigation.
Ward chair Shailendra Karki said the ward has laid emphasis on the development of agriculture sector along with oranges as there is a suitable geography for agriculture and fruit cultivation in Bhojpur-6. Ward Chair Karki said that they have been providing necessary support for the expansion of farming keeping in mind the problems seen in the agriculture sector seen here. He said that the ward has been constructing wells, plastic ponds and distributing pipes based on the needs of the farmers as there is main problem of irrigation for the farming system. He said that there is an environment for farmers to earn their livelihood by doing commercial farming if they work hard.
“We are running various farmer-oriented programmes for the development of the agriculture sector,” he said. It is easy to sell agricultural produce produced by farmers. We have been supporting the farmers on the basis of commercial schemes. In particular, we have focused on the farming system that suits the soil and geography here. ’
