Kavrepalanchok. The fields have been turned into a mess due to scattered stones, wood and tree roots. The farmers here are clearing the fields and preparing to plant potatoes by removing those roots (stubble) and stones.
Farmers in the area around Geldhung Bazaar in Bethanchowk Rural Municipality-2, who were in trouble after the Patne River flooded their fields due to incessant rains from October 10 to 12, are now trying to clear their fields and plant potatoes.
Farmers used to earn income by cultivating potatoes in the winter because they were getting good market prices. But this time, they complain that it is difficult to cultivate because the fields were completely flooded. Residents say that floods occur during the rainy season and that they face drinking water problems after the onset of winter.
Local Binod Timalsina said that despite the extension of electricity in Bethanchowk, which was damaged by the landslide, they are facing drinking water problems. Although he is rebuilding the damaged fields with his own labor, he says that it would be much easier if flood control and management of drinking water were done. The flood had swept away all the corn crops planted at that time.
Another local, Arjun Prasad Timalsina, said that this time the flood has caused a lot of damage, especially to the farmers of Bethanchowk, who were earning their income by cultivating potatoes as a cash crop. Farmers here, who used to dig and sell potatoes planted in Magh in Jestha, now spend their days clearing their fields to plant potatoes. He expressed his pain of having to make a living by making the fields fertile, which cannot be cleared even with a dozer.
Farmers are struggling to make their fields cultivable again by throwing stones into the river. Some are even taking them to other places with the help of vehicles and piling them up. Local Rupa Bhandari said that she is in even more trouble after the floods damaged her fields, which she should have been able to earn a living by producing crops and vegetables. He said that no matter what hardships and pains he has to endure, there is no alternative to cultivating a farm for a living.
Sita Timalsina, another farmer who has been facing problems after the flood destroyed her farm and house in the name of her property, said that since she had nowhere else to go, she had to use a dozer to cultivate the farm. “I had to protect the property I had for a living and earn money from farming,” she said, expressing her pain and adding, “I have not received any relief from anywhere so far.”
Even four months after the flood, the citizens here have complained that they have not received the support they deserve from the government. In that ward alone, the flood completely damaged 49 houses. The citizens of this area, who have been facing problems due to floods and landslides, have been trying to make a living by cultivating their own paddy fields over time.
