Manang. Farmers are happy after partial snowfall in the upper parts of the district. The delayed snowfall makes the mountains look sparkling. In recent days, snowfall has been occurring from the district headquarters Chame to Upper Manang. There has been no snowfall in the lower areas so far.
While snowfall in the upper areas has started to show snow in the mountains here, farmers here, who were worried about the lack of snowfall on time, are happy. Farmer Yangdung Gurung said that snowfall will help in farming.
‘We, who rely on snow for farming, have had problems when there is no snowfall on time. When snowfall falls late, irrigation cannot be done properly, but it still brings some relief,’ he said. ‘Snow does the work of water.’ He said that even when there is no snow, the cold causes the water in the rivers, streams, and lakes to freeze, causing problems in irrigation.
Since the water freezes at the source, it is difficult to use other irrigation options. Despite various projects and plans, farmers cannot irrigate through alternative irrigation methods due to the cold.
Farmer Serap Bista said that since the water freezes at the source, it is not possible to irrigate through alternative methods. ‘The source of water is located at a long distance, limited projects cannot meet it, there are many problems,’ he said. He said that the late snow will help in apple farming, vegetable and food production. The attraction of tourists is increasing after the snow starts appearing in the mountains.
Tourists say that they are attracted to the mountains, which used to look like black stones, after seeing snow. They say that tourists should come at this time. Locals say that the mountains, which look black during snowfall, will attract more tourists.
The tourist arrival season has begun in the district. Tourists come to Manang in two seasons. A provision has been made to pay separate amounts for the two seasons. Tourists see the views of the Himalayas, mountains, high mountains, the customs of the Manang people, and natural beauty, and also cross the Thorangla Bhanjyang from Manang and leave for Pokhara via Mustang.
