Kailali. Dhangadhi market has become the selling center of the farmers who have cultivated melons in different rivers of Kailali. Today, melons produced in Bagarkhet are being sold in the vicinity of Dhangadhi market by placing them in bullock carts.
Gopal Rana of Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City-17 said that with the increase in summer, farmers have been forced to sell melons. According to him, melons worth Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000 are being sold every day. “My house is far away from Dhangadhi and i can’t do business every day in a bullock cart, so I sell it for a day or two,” he said.
Shivuram Chaudhary, a farmer who has been cultivating melon on 10 kattha land in Bagar of Khutia for a long time, said that he has been selling melons by reaching Dhangadhi every day. According to him, he earns rs 4,000 to Rs 7,000 a day and sells up to two quintals per day.
“Initially, it was being sold at Rs 40-60 per kg, but today it is being sold at Rs 30 per kg. The price of melon has come down due to the increase in production,” he said.
This year, farmers are cultivating commercial melons in Khutia, Shivganga, Pathri river and nearby bagars. Similarly, some farmers have also cultivated commercial melons in Jugeda, Ghuiyaghat and Bangara Katan areas of Mohana Nadibagar. Indian farmers, including those from the Tharu community, have been cultivating melon commercially in Nadibagar.
