Farmers cultivating ‘wild yam’ on 14 ropanis of sloping land where crops cannot grow

Ilam. Commercial cultivation of wild yam has been started on 14 ropanis of sloping land in Hattidhunge, Mangsebung Rural Municipality-6, which is not suitable for grain cultivation. 13 people from Hattidhunge Tole have formed a farmer group and started commercial wild yam cultivation.

According to Prem Kumar Rai, President of Hattidhunge Farmers Group, yam cultivation has been started on the sloping land with an annual rent of Rs 25,000. Mangsebung Rural Municipality has provided Rs 100,000 to the group. Mangsebung Rural Municipality has provided the amount under the traditional tuber cultivation promotion program.

The farmer group has also started cultivating githa and bhakur along with wild yam. Currently, 16,000 wild yam plants, 450 bhakur plants and 150 githa plants have been planted in the garden. It is said that yam production will begin only after three years.

Seeds are collected from the forest for expansion of cultivation. He said that yam cultivation is easier than other crops as it does not require repeated maintenance after digging deep holes and adding plenty of fertilizer.
