Mustang. The expansion of the 33 kV transmission line in the Himalayan district of Mustang is progressing at a rapid pace. The Nepal Electricity Authority has started the expansion of the 33 kV transmission line from Kobang, Thasang Rural Municipality-2, Mustang to Charang, Loghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality, connecting it to Upper Mustang, covering a distance of 103 kilometers.
Currently, an 11 kV transmission line is in operation up to Korlanaka in Lomanthang in Upper Mustang, which borders Tibet, an autonomous region of northern China. Nepal Electricity Authority has extended the access of 33 kV transmission line under the central transmission line to Thasang-2 Kobang in Mustang.
The Nepal Electricity Authority has taken forward the plan of 33 kV transmission line to connect it to the central transmission line throughout the district. According to the electricity standards of Nepal Electricity Authority, electricity should not be transmitted from one substation to another substation for more than 50 kilometers.
However, an 11 kV transmission line is in operation from Kobang in Mustang to Korlanaka, a distance of about 150 kilometers. Due to this, there are frequent problems and challenges in electricity supply in Mustang district.
Currently, the electricity transmission line operating from Kobang in Mustang to the northern region is 11 kV, so the citizens of Mustang are facing extreme electrical problems. The current 11 kV power line service is a compelling situation where if there is a power problem at any one place, the power supply to the entire district has to be shut down.
The NEA has awarded a contract for a 33 kV transmission line to make the power transmission line in Mustang district sustainable, reliable and effective.
A contract agreement was signed with Paradise Hulas JKB JV in July 2023 at a cost of Rs 276.5 million to expand the 33 kV transmission transmission line by constructing substations in two sessions from Kowang in Mustang to Chaile and from Chaile to Charang in Upper Mustang, said JV representative Engineer Deepak Kumar Mandal. .
The authority has initiated work on a new 33 kV transmission line to completely replace the current 11 kV transmission line, according to the JV’s representative, Engineer Mandal. The extension of the 33 kV transmission line in Mustang is targeted to be completed by July 2025 as per the two-year contract agreement.
After signing the contract with Praveerkaran, Paradise Hulas JKB JV has completed 95 percent of the work of the extension of the electricity pole along with digging a 6-foot deep pit and PCC to bury the electricity pole to expand the 33 kV transmission transmission line, the JV Engineer Board mentioned.
It is said that the work of pulling the wires of the transmission line is being carried out at a rapid pace with the aim of handing over the 33 kV transmission transmission line to the authority within the next six months. Paradise Hulas JKB has reported that the work of laying the 33 kV transmission line, about 25 kilometers from Kobang to Jomsom in Thasang Rural Municipality-2 of Mustang, has been completed.
‘Currently, the work of laying the electricity wire is being done in two/three places including Jomsom and Thini,’ said the Engineer Mandal, ‘The weather is also favorable in Upper Mustang, we are preparing to deploy another team there for the work of laying the wire.’ As soon as the work on the 33 kV transmission line to Charang in Mustang is completed, there is a plan to put the line into operation as a test of electricity transmission and hand it over to the authority.
Similarly, the Nepal Electricity Authority has already invited tenders for the construction of two substations in Chaile, Baragsang Muktishtetra-3, Mustang, and Charang, Loghekar Damodarkunda-1, Upper Mustang, for the expansion of the 33 kV transmission line, according to Lopsang Chomphel Bista, Chairman of Loghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality.
The necessary land for the construction of the substations to be constructed by the Nepal Electricity Authority in Chaile and Charang in Mustang has already been managed, Chairman Bista mentioned.
