Kathmandu. Lawmakers said it was unfortunate that public transport was not operating even when the government and the business community had reached an agreement. They said this while talking to media persons in the federal parliament premises on Tuesday.

Nepali Congress lawmaker Jeevan Pariyar said the transport entrepreneurs were causing misery to the general public even though the agitation could be held again if the agreement was not implemented. Stating that the transport entrepreneurs have made a big mistake by not implementing the agreement even after the agreement was reached, he urged them to implement the agreements reached between the government and the transport entrepreneurs.

Lawmaker Pariyar said that the problems in the public transport sector should be resolved through dialogue and discussion.

“An understanding has been reached between the government and the transport entrepreneurs. It is unfortunate that transportation is not running even after an agreement has been reached. If the agreement is not implemented, then there will be a movement again. But what you are doing to hurt so many people is very wrong in itself. Therefore, I would like to urge the transport entrepreneurs to implement the agreements reached with the government. The shortcomings in public transport should be resolved through discussion and negotiation. It is very wrong to stop transportation. ’

CpN (Unified Socialist) senior vice-chair Rajendra Pandey said the regulations issued by the Gandaki state government would benefit the general public.

However, the government needs to consult the licensed entrepreneurs while issuing the new policy, he said, adding that the transport entrepreneurs were agitated due to lack of necessary coordination and cooperation among the three tiers of government.

He said that the policy should be issued only after discussing with public transport.

“The main thing is that what the Gandaki state government has started now will also benefit the general public,” he said. Because the general public could take advantage of any means. But the government itself should take the new policy only after consulting with the organizations running with approval by giving licenses and taking crores of rupees to the borrowing place. Because the government is in many places, isn’t it? The government should issue a new policy only after making a kind of understanding with the companies running public transport. It does not seem that any revolutionary policy has been issued now. ’

According to him, the provincial and local governments are not consulting the federal government while issuing the new act. Prem Suwal of The Nepal Workers and Peasants Party said that the entrepreneurs had to come to the streets due to the weakness of the government.

According to him, this situation has arisen as the political parties have not been able to discipline their cadres. He said that the government should have worked before the problem in the public transport sector, but it could not be done.

“Transport entrepreneurs have to serve the country and the people. The government is also involved in this. Transport workers are also party workers. The parties could not discipline their cadres. The government should act before such a situation comes. That didn’t happen. When elections are held, it is necessary to go to the organizations of the business and defeat it and win it. Therefore, the government has to say clearly. The people were sad about it rather than being clear about it. Now the people should be clearly told. ’

Rastriya Swatantra Party lawmaker Shiva Nepali stressed the need of persuading the parties concerned while issuing the new law.

He said the problem was due to lack of state investment in the public transport sector. Stating that public transport is driven by the private sector as a whole, he stressed that syndicates should not be imposed.

He said, “The parties concerned have to agree to make a law related to ride sharing. The government has also said that ride-sharing will be legalized. Now perhaps the solution to this problem is going to come soon. At present, the government has invested only in the common bus of public transport. I say syndicates should not be imposed as the private sector as a whole is run by the private sector. It is necessary for the state and businessmen to move forward so that there is no loss and the general public will get services. ’

Lawmakers have stressed the need for entrepreneurs to implement the moU as an agreement has already been reached between the government and the entrepreneurs.
