Kathmandu. Green Energy Entrepreneurs Nepal, an organization of energy entrepreneurs, has demanded that the government remove the 35-year-old restriction on the licensing of hydropower projects smaller than 10 megawatts. Organizing a press conference in Kathmandu on Wednesday, the organization has asked the government to review the inequities and technical aspects in transmission line and grid connection agreements, removing the 35-year-old restriction.

Green Energy Entrepreneurs Nepal Coordinator Surya Prasad Adhikari said that out of the 110 hydropower projects worth 510 megawatts built and operated by the private sector, most of the hydropower projects are running at a loss. He mentioned that while going to the hydropower sector, the banks that provide loans have put some projects into the auction process and have kept some in a critical financial condition and some in a weak financial condition.

According to him, the entrepreneurs have made six demands, including removing the inequalities in the PPAs and increasing the power purchase rate, maintaining the production permit period for 50 years, imposing a maximum tax of 1 percent on every equipment, spare parts and services purchased from abroad for the JVs, and immediately removing the unequal contracts of projects generating electricity through alternative arrangements. He said that it is necessary to initiate a debate on the issue of sustainable operation of small hydropower projects.
