Kathmandu. Stakeholders have emphasized increasing youth-targeted investment and developing youth- and climate-friendly local governance systems. In a program organized here today by Jagriti Bal and Yuva Sarokar Nepal in collaboration with British Council Nepal, they emphasized the need to ensure youth access to policy-making processes related to youth, climate and environment and to all three levels of government.
The youth activists in the Madhyabindu Municipality area of Gandaki Province and Sunwal Municipality emphasized the need to effectively implement youth representation in the existing structure and mobilize additional resources and investment for youth-friendly local governance.
The youth of Gandaki Province and Lumbini Province shared their experiences of positive work done in the community despite the challenges of rain, saying that investing in youth will enhance their capacity and make climate-related campaigns more effective.
The program also included the participation of Tribhuvan University Associate Professor Dr. Sudip Thakuri urged the youth to be empowered in such campaigns and said that youth leadership is indispensable for climate adaptation and inclusive measures. Binita Karki of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nepal shared the experience of good practices in the past in collaboration with the National Youth Council and Jagriti Bal and Youth Concern Nepal in promoting climate-friendly governance and youth-friendly governance, saying that this has provided an example of what should not be done.
Kebal Shrestha, Program Manager of the British Council Nepal, emphasized the need to empower youth as agents of change by providing them with knowledge and skills related to environmental protection. Govinda Prasad Pokharel of the National Nature Conservation Fund said that he was ready to collaborate with the youth and urged them to move forward for environmental conservation and development.
Nani Maya Thapa, Senior Vice President of the Federation of Non-Governmental Organizations Nepal, said that the program should not be run only when there is money, but should be made sustainable through partnerships. Surya Dhakal, Member of the House of Representatives and Member of the Agricultural Cooperatives and Natural Resources Committee, said that there is a plan to systematically implement the Disaster Information System and include the subject of disasters in the curriculum. He said that the government and parliament are serious about the development, prosperity and entrepreneurship of the youth.
