Kathmandu. New Delhi has licensed Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service.

This has opened up “another frontier of connectivity” for India, the communications minister said. The launch of Starlink, which provides high-speed internet access to remote locations using low-earth orbit satellites, has triggered intense debate in India on topics ranging from predatory pricing to spectrum allocation.

Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said he had a “fruitful meeting” with Gweny Sutwell, chairman and chief operating officer of SpaceX, owner of Starlink. “Sutwell praised the license granted to Starlink, calling it the “perfect start of the journey,” the minister said on Musk-owned social networking platform X on Tuesday.

This comes after India’s two largest telecom service providers Jio Platforms and rival Bharti Airtel announced in March that they have tied up with SpaceX to provide starlink internet to their customers.

Musk, the owner of SpaceX, has spoken to Mukesh Ambani, Asia’s richest man and owner of Jio Platforms, about how to provide satellite spectrum.

Musk’s business interests in India are currently limited to X, but tesla, the tech entrepreneur’s electric vehicle maker, is preparing to enter the country.
