Kathmandu. Nepal Electricity Authority has started supplying electricity through an underground distribution system in the tourist capital Pokhara. The work of undergrounding, strengthening and automating the electricity distribution system (wire) under the Pokhara-Bharatpur Distribution System Strengthening Project has been completed and electricity supply has started to the customers in the area through the same system.

In the first phase, the distribution line from Kundahar 132/11 kV substation in Pokhara to the west via Amarsingh Chowk, Buddha Chowk to Seti River Bridge section has been laid underground and about 300 customers in the area have been supplied with electricity.

In coordination with the Mugling-Pokhara Road Expansion Project, the transmission and distribution system has been laid underground and the overhead lines and poles have been removed. After the wires are laid underground, the ugliness created by the tangled wires has been removed and the area looks beautiful. Initially, only the distribution system up to Kundahar substation was underground, but later it was extended to the main entrance of the airport. Executive Director of the NEA, Kulman Ghising, monitored the work of making the distribution system underground and directed to gradually start electricity supply in the completed areas and remove overhead structures.

Executive Director Ghising monitored the work being done in the main tourist area of Pokhara, Lakeside, the airport and other areas. Executive Director Ghising directed the NEA Gandaki Provincial Office Chief and the project to immediately complete the remaining work at Lakeside in coordination with the Metropolitan City, Road Office and other bodies and start electricity supply through the underground system.

Work is underway to underground the 11 kV and 400 volt lines in the main city and roads of Pokhara under the Pokhara Distribution Center and to lay optical fiber in these areas. Project Chief Anand Subedi said that the overall construction progress of the Pokhara area is 54 percent so far. Since the work has been completed in the Maxamed Street area in Lakeside, electricity supply will be provided there through an underground system soon, Chief Subedi informed.

Since optical fiber will be laid along with the electric wire, internet, telecommunication, and cable television service providers will be able to provide services using the optical fiber. The underground system will be safer than the current overhead distribution system and will help maintain the beauty of the city by removing the wires that are making it ugly. Since there is no disruption to the electricity system due to wind, rain, lightning, etc., the electricity provided through the underground distribution system is reliable, quality, and safe, and the loss of life and property due to electrical accidents will be minimal.

The Pokhara-Bharatpur Distribution System Strengthening Project has been started with the investment of the Authority and a concessional loan from the Asian Development Bank. A contract agreement was signed with Tata Project India in Asoj 2078 for the construction of the project for US $ 16.7 million and Rs 496.8 million. The target is to complete the work in the Pokhara area by the upcoming Shrawan.
