Kathmandu. The fuel-efficient, wide-body Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which crashed in India on Thursday, is the pride of the US company’s list of long-range aircraft. More than 80 airlines around the world have ordered 2,598 planes and 889 are still awaiting delivery since it first joined Japan’s All Nippon Airways in October 2011.

The cost of this aircraft is 248 million US dollars i.e. 33.96 billion rupees. The plane crash, which is considered safe in terms of long distance and safety, has dealt a big blow to American aircraft manufacturer Boeing.

The demand for aircraft for its fuel-efficient, wide-body and lightweight structure is popular all over the world. The company claims that it consumes 20 percent less fuel over long distances than older, similar-sized passenger aircraft.

It can be used for ‘point-to-point’ services, meaning it can fly directly to the destination instead of relying on the ‘hub’ system used by heavy aircraft. According to Boeing, the use of the 787 has opened 180 point-to-point routes.

three versions

Currently, there are three versions of the 787. Boeing’s 787-8 can carry 248 passengers up to 13,530 kilometers (8,400 miles), while 787-9 can carry 296 passengers up to 14,010 kilometers and 787-10 can carry 330 passengers up to 11,910 kilometers.

The plane, carrying 242 passengers and crew members, crashed in Ahmedabad on Thursday. The plane was flying to London but crashed shortly after take-off from the western Indian city of Ahmedabad. According to Indian police, 241 passengers on board the plane died.

Boeing said it was aware of the plane crash and was working to gather more information. This was the 787 Dreamliner’s first fatal accident.

Blow to Boeing

Between 2021 and 2023, Boeing’s aircraft program suffered a number of failures, including repeated and expensive delivery suspensions. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has completed work to strengthen quality assurance checks and inspections on production lines. In April this year, the FAA allowed Boeing to speed up production to make seven aircraft a month. Boeing is facing extensive difficulties in terms of sales.

Despite positive signals from Beijing, the manufacturer has not supplied any aircraft to China in May after it temporarily banned Chinese airlines from working with the company due to the trade war that Washington started a month ago.
