Agency. Dozens of flights to and from the resort island of Bali were cancelled on Wednesday after a volcano erupted in indonesia’s east, officials said. Mount Levotobi Lucky-LaKi, a 1,584-metre (5,197-foot) volcano on the tourist island of Flores, erupted on Tuesday, raising its alertness to the highest level of a four-tier system.

Airport operator Ankasa Pura Indonesia told AFP in a statement: “Many flights have been canceled at I Gusti Ngurah Raya Airport due to volcanic activity of Levatobi Laki-Laki in eastern Nusa Tenggara.” The cancelled flights include Jetstar and Virgin Australia services to Australian cities. Air India, Air New Zealand, Singapore’s TigerAir and China’s Juneao Airlines also cancelled flights “due to volcanoes”, according to bali’s international airport website.

Jetstar confirmed in a statement on its website on Wednesday that flights to and from Bali had been cancelled. “According to the forecast, the ash cloud is expected to clear by tonight. As a result, flights this afternoon will be delayed after this evening,” Jetstar said. Several domestic AirAsia flights en route to Labuan Bajo, a popular tourist hotspot in Flores, have also been cancelled. Bali’s Nagurah Rai Airport said 32 flights inside and outside the island had been cancelled on domestic and international routes.

According to a customer service agent at the airport, the aviation hub is still operating normally despite the cancellation of flights. “It depends on the route and the airline,” said the agent, who declined to be named. Franciscus Javerius Seda Airport, a relatively small airport near Maumere on Flores Island, was closed until Thursday morning, officials said on social media.
