Kathmandu. CPN (Unified Socialist) lawmaker Ghanashyam Rijal has demanded the government to withdraw the 2 percent tax imposed on gold ornaments through the budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Assembly on Thursday, Lawmaker Rijal said that the gold business, which has slowed down due to high price rise and economic slowdown, will be in further crisis due to the luxury tax. He said that gold and diamond jewellery in India is 5.7 percent cheaper than Nepal, so there is a risk of increasing illegal trade.

He said that the government should not create a situation where low-income Nepalis cannot buy jewelry when the jewelry industry is in shambles.

“The gold business, which has slowed down due to high price rise and economic slowdown, is likely to be in further trouble due to the 2 per cent luxury tax imposed through the budget statement for the fiscal year 2082/83 BS,” he said. Due to the luxury tax, gold and diamond jewelry in India is 5. It has been observed that due to the cheaper 7 percent, illegal transactions can increase and the Nepali jewelry industry has collapsed, so low-income Nepali citizens will not be able to bring gold ornaments. It will also have a big impact on Nepal’s religious culture and tourism. Therefore, I draw the attention of the government to withdraw the luxury tax imposed on gold ornaments, to issue the trade guidelines demanded by the gold traders immediately, and to provide gold of small results to the businessmen as per the working procedure of the Rastra Bank. ’

Rijal also drew the attention of the government to immediately issue the trade guidelines demanded by the gold traders and provide gold of small results to the traders as per the working procedure of the Rastra Bank.
