Birendra Khadka, 27, of Jabang Dudilabot of Madi rural municipality-1 in Rolpa and Birendra Oli, 31, of Parivartan rural municipality-5 have started earning a decent income from watermelon cultivation in Dang. In Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City-7, Ghusra, the youths are involved in watermelon cultivation on the banks of The Babai River. The bagar, which was in the past sandy, has now turned into greenery. Farmer Khadka said that they are happy with the better production of watermelon in Bagar than expected.
Having studied agriculture, he said that he would move forward from agriculture profession in his own place. He said, “I had been doing flower business by establishing an agricultural farm seven years ago with the intention of studying agriculture and doing something in my own place. ’
He said that he is earning a good income from it. He has been doing business through Dang Agromart Agriculture Farm. He said that four and a half bighas of land in Ghusra has been taken on rent for watermelon cultivation. After paying Rs 80,000 for the land, they have rented the land for a period of three months and cultivated watermelon.
Birendra Wali, another farmer, said they are selling watermelons of Aahana, Saraswati and Bishala varieties at rs 50 kg and climbers at Rs 70 kg. Currently, 1,000 kg is sold daily. He said that more than half of the sales have been done so far. According to him, local farmers are affected when they come cheaply from outside the country. Last year, he made a transaction of Rs 1.2 million, he said.
He said that so far this year, he has been able to make a transaction of Rs 500,000. Farmer Wali said that the income is better than expected. He said that he has chosen agriculture profession to become self-reliant in the country. He, however, said that it would be easier for him and other farmers if the government tries to stop watermelons coming from foreign countries as there is a problem in some marketing. He said that it has become the choice of the common consumers as they are producing less pesticides and organic products.
Arjun KC of Ghorahi-14, who had gone to buy watermelon at Dang Agromart Agriculture Farm, said that it is of great importance during the summer. He also urged other citizens to eat the products produced in their own villages. Young farmers have given a strong example that if you can cultivate watermelon in such a way, you can become self-reliant at home and do not have to go abroad if you have skills and knowledge.
