Dairy farmers excited about receiving subsidies for production

Baglung. Dairy farmers in Baglung are excited after starting to receive a subsidy of Rs 5 per liter of milk. Farmers who were getting Rs 2.5 per liter until last year have started getting Rs 5 from the current fiscal year. The Veterinary Hospital and Animal Service Expert Center, Baglung has started providing milk subsidies to farmers based on production.

Dr. Rishiram Sapkota, head of the Veterinary Hospital and Animal Service Expert Center, Baglung, informed that the subsidy has been provided to encourage farmers and make the district self-reliant in milk. He said that the center provides subsidies to farmers affiliated with dairy cooperatives.

According to Dr. Sapkota, 23 metric tons of milk is being produced annually in Baglung. Out of this, 200,000 liters are exported to other districts. The subsidy has been given to farmers here for the past four years. The expert center has been giving subsidies to about eight hundred farmers here. ‘Many farmers in the district have been producing milk, out of which about one hundred sell milk commercially for twelve months. Earlier, we were giving two rupees, but from this year it has been given five days,’ he said. This year, four million rupees have been allocated for eight hundred thousand liters of milk, and the amount will reach the hands of farmers.’

Currently, subsidies are being given to farmers through seven cooperatives. According to the Veterinary Hospital and Animal Service Expert Center, Baglung, more milk is currently being produced in Baglung than the required 91 liters per capita.

Suresh Kandel, a dairy farmer from Kathekhola Rural Municipality-6, said that the state’s production-based subsidy has increased the enthusiasm of many people like him to work.
