Chitwan. Dairy farmers have complained that they are not getting the price of milk set by the government. After dairy products came from the Indian border area, the milk produced here has not been able to get the market price.

They say that private dairies are transporting milk at low prices. Farmers say that they are forced to sell milk cheaply due to lack of alternative. Chitwan District Milk Producers Cooperative Association President Kishor Bagal informed that the state has fixed 65 per liter for milk with four fat and eight SNF, excluding the office operating price, but they are transporting it at a price of 3 less than this.

He said, “They have been threatening not to transport milk and reducing the price when milk imports are not stopped.” Now, Nepali farmers are suffering because milk and dairy products are being imported at a cheaper price. He said that even though more than 40 large dairy companies in the country are buying milk from 115 dairy cooperatives in the district, they are forced to sell milk at a price lower than the price set by the state.

350,000 liters of milk are being produced in the district daily. Out of which, 150,000 liters of milk are consumed by industries outside the district. He informed that farmers who have not received payment for milk for the past 6 months are being told not to come to collect milk from tomorrow if they do not receive milk at the price they have set.

He said that farmers are afraid of not coming to collect milk when they ask for payment. Currently, farmers in the district have not been able to receive more than Rs 800 million in payment. Since Bhadra, dairy farmers have not received payment from the Dairy Development Corporation and private companies. He said that Rs 350 million is yet to be paid by the corporation. There are currently more than 40,000 dairy farmers in the district. The farmers are worried as the state has not shown any interest in solving their problems.
