Galkot. Rangkhani of Jaimini Municipality-10 is one of the 22 largest conventional mines in Nepal. The Rangkhani area, which has dozens of tunnels, is awaiting excavation.
Some tunnels have been buried due to lack of protection and landslides have also damaged them. Many people have lost their lives while extracting copper. This has not been seen in recent times. Bam Bahadur Shrees, 95, of Jamini-10, Rangkhani, said his father-in-law had removed the copper thread from the side of the house.
“Baje had earned a living by extracting copper thread and selling it, but later the mine was closed due to higher tax on copper thread,” said local elder Shrees, adding, “There are copper-digging dobs all over the land, tunnels up to four to 50 meters are still there, we have walked in the tunnel, but some tunnels have started to be erased, there is a situation buried in a landslide, the government needs to emphasize on excavation.” ”
There are many holes in copper mines in Rangkhani area of Baglung. Some of these tunnel holes have started to be erased. The copper mines mined more than 120 years ago in Dandakhani and other areas of Rangkhani are on the verge of being buried. The copper mines, which were closed due to non-payment of taxes to the state, are yet to come into operation.
Bam Bahadur Shrees, a local, said that the copper mine was closed due to non-payment of 14 dharni tax to the state. He said he had heard that the tax was closed due to lack of resources. Locals have demanded that the mine should be brought into operation after conducting a feasibility study as there are still copper residues.
Locals said that the income of the local government and the locals would increase if the mine is brought into operation. Lal Bahadur Pun, a local, said that the locals have been extracting a small amount of copper from the mine using their own skills and technology, but with the development of recent technology, a large amount of copper mines can be extracted.
It is estimated that there is a large amount of copper here as workers from other districts also come and work in the mines here. Ward chair Shree Prasad Thapa said the federal government should take initiative as the local government does not have the right to operate and excavate the mines. Jaimini Municipality is conducting feasibility study of the mine in Damek and Rangkhani areas, he said.
It is customary in the local language to call the thread extracted for copper production as Rangkhani, so it is customary for the then King Rajauta to name this place Rangkhani as it is a mine of Rang. Although permission has been obtained from the Department of Mines and Geology to conduct a feasibility study for mining in Tamankhola Rural Municipality, Baglung Municipality and Jaimini Municipality, the data is yet to come.
There are copper mines in baglung municipality, Jaimini municipality and Tamankhola rural municipality. Along with metal mines, there are also a large number of stone mines in the district. Although stone quarrying is carried out in some places, iron and copper mines have not been mined so far. -RSS
