Kanchanpur. Shuklaphanta Municipality-3 has been continuously providing free nutrition materials to improve the health condition of pregnant and lactating mothers. Under the programme, the ward office has been providing eggs, chickpeas, soap, salt and handkerchiefs to the new mothers.

Dil Bahadur Dhami, health assistant (HA) at Pipaldi Basic Health Centre, said that although these materials appear to be cheap, their impact is profound and long-term. “We have provided nutrition materials to 34 women in the current fiscal year 2081/82 BS,” he said, adding, “We have provided nutrition materials to more than 330 women in the last seven years.” ‘

Chana and eggs have been found to be effective in physical strength, quality of breastfeeding, blood volume and nutrition of both mother and baby, while soap helps in cleanliness and reducing the risk of infection, according to Health Assistant Dhami.

Salt plays an effective role in preventing diseases like thyroid along with replenishing the required iodine. A handkerchief is useful in the care of the baby.

“Many women did not know that nutritious food should be eaten during delivery, but we understood that the health condition of the baby and mother can be improved only after the ward office starts providing nutritious materials,” said Sitadevi Dagaura, who took the nutrition material. ‘

Manju Chaudhary, a local, said that they have learned through this program that soap should wash hands, pay attention to personal hygiene, salt contains iodine and helps fight disease.

Ward Chair Narendra Prasad Chaudhary said that after the operation of the program, the quality of breastfeeding has increased, health awareness has increased in women and families, morale and self-esteem among pregnant women have increased and the rate of transmission of infectious diseases has decreased.
