Construction of bailey bridge at Puwakhola in final stages

Ilam. The construction of bailey bridge at Puwakhola under the Kechana-Kanchanjunga (Mechi Corridor) road connecting Ilam district headquarters to Birtamod of Jhapa has reached the final stage. Engineer Arjun Ghimire, information officer at the Road Division Office, Ilam, informed that the bailey bridge is being installed at Puwakhol connecting Golakharka of Ilam municipality-9 and Soyak of Ilam municipality-11.

The bailey bridge is being constructed at a cost of Rs 13.5 million by the federal government. He said that the bailey bridge is being constructed to be completed by mid-May. The Bailey Bridge will be 48.6 meters (160 feet) long.

He said that 70 percent of the work of Bailey Bridge, which was awarded by the construction company, has been completed. Engineer Ghimire said, “The installation has started by bringing all the materials of the bailey bridge and overall about 70 percent of the work has been completed.” ’

The construction of bailey bridge has started for the first time in this place. Earlier, passengers were forced to take risky journeys in the absence of a bridge. In the mid-monsoon season, the road was completely closed.

After the completion of bailey bridge, smooth and regular traffic will be operated in some areas of Jhapa, Ilam, Panchthar, Taplejung and Terhathum during the rainy season. This is expected to facilitate the transportation of goods and movement of passengers in the area.

The road, which is considered as an alternative road to the Mechi Highway, is 50 kilometers from Ilam to Birtamod. A 15-km road has been blacktopped in Mai municipality area of Ilam section. Out of the remaining 17 kilometers, 14 kilometers are being constructed on contract basis. Road Division Chief Engineer Pawan Bhattarai said that the process of starting the work on the remaining areas has been forwarded.
