Myagdi. 139 suspension bridges have been constructed in the district with the technical assistance of Milan Myagdi, a non-governmental organization operating in Myagdi, and financial investment from various bodies. This information was given by the organization’s chairperson Dilmaya Bitalu on the occasion of the 26th foundation day held in Beni, Milan Myagdi. According to him, the suspension bridge was built to make it easier to travel from the streams and rivers of the villages near the district headquarters to remote areas.
After the construction of the suspension bridge connecting the remote and remote settlements of Raghuganga and Annapurna rural municipalities, which are considered remote in the district, the locals no longer have to travel for hours and the travel time has been shortened, he said.
‘We have been involved in the effort to connect communities through suspension bridges for years, and we are continuing community-based programs,’ he said. In this context, 274 households have benefited from the recent construction of the bridge connecting Dhawalagiri-7 Dharapani and Malika Rural Municipality-7 Khara in the district. After the construction of the bridge, the one-hour journey has been shortened to 15 minutes.
He said that after the construction of the suspension bridge, the residents of various settlements have been helped in promoting tourism easily. He informed that in the current fiscal year, two suspension bridges are under construction in Beni Municipality, one in Mangala Rural Municipality, one in Raghuganga Rural Municipality and one in Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality through Milan Myagdi. Bitalu said that after the construction of the bridge, the journey of the locals has been shortened and it has become easier to transport goods required for agriculture and other household purposes. The local infrastructure department has stated that the government has constructed 2,264 suspension bridges in Gandaki Province so far.
According to Bharat Prasad Aryal, director general of the department, suspension bridges longer than 120 meters have been constructed by the federal government and suspension bridges shorter than that by the provincial and local levels. The government has been able to construct a large number of bridges because all three levels have constructed bridges. Director general Aryal says that since all the materials for the construction of suspension bridges, except for the logs, are available in Nepal, the construction of bridges has become more convenient.
The 15th Five-Year Plan also mentions that suspension bridges should be built within a distance that can be reached by walking for at least half an hour. In line with the same goal, the government has accelerated the construction of suspension bridges to facilitate transportation in the hilly districts. ‘Earlier, suspension bridges were only used for river crossing,’ he said, ‘Now, there is a demand for the construction of suspension bridges not only for river crossing but also for reducing the distance in travel and for tourism purposes.’
