Gorkha. Compensation has been determined for the residents of the area affected by the Budhigandaki Hydropower Project. The compensation has been determined with the participation of people’s representatives of Chumanubri Rural Municipality, representatives of the promoter company Sahas Urja and locals.
According to Him Pathak, Managing Director of Sahas Urja, the price of land in the settlement area of Salleri in Ward No. 3, where the dam is being built, has been fixed at Rs 300,000 per anna. He said, ‘For those with land less than four annas, compensation has been determined at Rs 400,000 per anna and Rs 150,000 per anna outside the settlement.’
According to him, it is estimated that compensation of about 80 ropanis should be given. The meeting did not evaluate the houses. He informed that the compensation for the house will be determined based on the report prepared by the rural municipality technician. 26 households will be displaced by the project.
Nima Lama, the chairperson of the rural municipality, informed that discussions are also being held on the rehabilitation of the displaced. “Discussions are being held on the issue of resettling some of those displaced due to the cyclone in the film industry and some in the real world, but no decision has been made,” Lama said.
Rural Municipality Chairperson Nima Lama, Vice Chairperson Laxmi Gurung, Ward No. 2 Chairperson Ram Kumar Gurung, executive members, ward members, representatives of the Nepali Congress, Nepal Communist Party (UML) and CPN (Maoist Center), residents of Salleri, Bhaluvan, Jagat, Nagchet, and others were present at the compensation determination meeting.
The project, with a capacity of 341 MW using semi-reservoir technology (Picking Run of River), is the largest project run by the private sector. Sahas Urja will construct a dam in Salleri and from there, it will generate electricity at the Tatopani Power House in Dharche-3 through a 6.8-kilometer underground tunnel.
The electricity generated will be connected to the central transmission line through a 45-kilometer transmission line through the Ratamate substation in Nuwakot. The total cost of the project is Rs 70 billion.
