Syangja. Some farmers here have started commercial potato farming. Farmers from Galyang, Chapakot, Bhirkot, and Waling have started commercial potato farming.

This year, potato farming was done on 2,400 ropanis in Syangja, said Binod Hamal, head of the Agricultural Knowledge Center. Last year, potatoes were cultivated on 1,850 ropanis.

‘The area under potato cultivation in the district has increased, and as the area increases, production also increases,’ he said. ‘There are signs that production will increase this year as well.’

He said that the Knowledge Center has been supporting potato farmers with on-site technical training, subsidies for seed purchase, irrigation, pest management, grading, packing, storage and marketing.

Potato cultivation is carried out individually and collectively through farmer groups and cooperative commercial farms in the district. ‘Syangja is self-sufficient in the production of various varieties of seed potatoes, and seed potatoes are also exported from the district to other places,’ he said. ‘Since food potatoes are not produced in the district, they have to be imported from elsewhere. As farmers are increasingly attracted to commercial potato production, production will also increase.’

He said that seeds are recommended after studying which varieties of potatoes are suitable for planting in which climate and geography. Advanced varieties of seed potatoes including Janakdev, Khumal Ujwal, Cardinal, MS 45, and Rosita are being planted in the district.
